Contraindications & Risk Factors for
5-MeO-DMT/Bufo Administration
I. Supplements & Herbal Interactions
Certain supplements can increase the risk of serotonin syndrome, blood pressure spikes, or other adverse reactions.
High-Risk Supplements (AVOID)
Kratom – Can cause respiratory depression or sedation when mixed with 5-MeO.
St. John’s Wort – Increases serotonin levels, elevating the risk of serotonin syndrome.
Kava – Has GABAergic effects and can lead to excessive sedation or respiratory depression.
Phenibut – Potent GABA agonist, increasing the risk of blackouts or amnesia.
Mucuna Pruriens (L-Dopa) – Can alter dopamine levels, increasing anxiety or dysphoria.
Yohimbine – Alpha-2 antagonist, may cause hypertension, panic, or extreme cardiovascular stress.
Methylene Blue – Strong MAOI-like properties, can cause severe serotonin syndrome when combined with 5-MeO.
Cautionary Supplements (Use with Caution)
Ashwagandha – Can potentiate relaxation but may increase sedation or dizziness.
Rhodiola Rosea – May impact serotonin and dopamine levels, increasing risk of overstimulation.
Ginseng – Stimulating adaptogen, may contribute to anxiety or overstimulation.
II. Medications to AVOID (High Risk of Adverse Reactions)
1. Serotonergic Medications (High Risk of Serotonin Syndrome)
SSRIs (e.g., Prozac, Zoloft, Lexapro, Paxil)
SNRIs (e.g., Effexor, Cymbalta)
TCAs (e.g., Amitriptyline, Nortriptyline)
MAOIs (e.g., Nardil, Parnate, Selegiline) – Can be fatal when combined with 5-MeO.
5-HTP (serotonin precursor supplement)
MDMA (Molly, Ecstasy) or other entactogens – Increases serotonin levels, amplifying risks.
Tramadol – Acts on serotonin and opioid receptors, high risk of seizures.
2. Dopaminergic & Stimulant Medications
Amphetamines (Adderall, Vyvanse, Ritalin, Concerta) – Can cause hypertension, overstimulation, or panic.
Bupropion (Wellbutrin, Zyban) – Can lower seizure threshold, increasing seizure risk.
3. Sedatives & GABAergic Medications
Benzodiazepines (Xanax, Klonopin, Valium, Ativan) – Blunt the experience; withdrawal increases seizure risk.
Barbiturates (Phenobarbital, Secobarbital) – Can cause respiratory depression when combined with 5-MeO.
4. Opioids
Oxycodone, Hydrocodone, Morphine, Fentanyl, Methadone, Suboxone – Risk of respiratory depression, vomiting, and blackouts.
5. Blood Pressure & Heart Medications
Beta Blockers (Propranolol, Metoprolol, Atenolol) – Can cause dangerous blood pressure drops or dizziness.
ACE Inhibitors (Lisinopril, Enalapril) – May amplify hypotensive effects of 5-MeO.
III. Medical Conditions to Screen For
High-Risk Conditions (Strong Contraindications)
Bipolar Disorder (Especially Type I) – Can trigger mania, psychosis, or extreme dysregulation.
Schizophrenia & Psychotic Disorders – Can exacerbate psychosis or dissociation.
Unmanaged PTSD with Dissociative Features – Can lead to severe retraumatization.
Severe Anxiety/Panic Disorders – May exacerbate panic responses.
Epilepsy or Seizure Disorders – 5-MeO-DMT lowers seizure threshold.
Hypertension (High Blood Pressure) – Risk of dangerous blood pressure spikes.
Cardiovascular Disease (Arrhythmias, Heart Conditions) – Increases heart rate and blood pressure, which can be fatal.
Recent Stroke or TIA (Transient Ischemic Attack) – High risk of complications.
Cautionary Conditions (Case-by-Case Basis)
Depression (Especially If On Antidepressants) – Risk of serotonin syndrome if on SSRIs/SNRIs.
ADHD (If On Stimulant Medications) – Potential for excess stimulation or panic.
Asthma or Respiratory Issues – 5-MeO can cause breathing irregularities.
IV. Additional Considerations
Recent Psychedelic Use
Psilocybin, LSD, DMT, Ayahuasca, or Ketamine in the past 1-2 weeks may cause cross-tolerance or emotional overload.
Recent Trauma or Major Life Stressors
5-MeO can bring up deeply buried material, and those in unstable psychological states may be unable to integrate the experience properly.
