Getting There

If you are using GPS to get to the property, you will need to plug the address in before you get out of cell phone reception, usually outside Woodland Park. Off Teller County Rd 1, we are the very last address on Gold King Drive. You can drive straight to the end, where Gold King ends at a cul-de-sac. There is a road that keeps going straight through the cul-de-sac (not the gate at the left end of the cul-de-sac, the road straight back). The marshy area to the right of that driveway is actually the beginning of our property. Once on our driveway, you will see a red gate on the left which is an entrance to the State Wilderness Area. Pass that. You will see our gate around to the right of that. Open the gate uphill please. You can park up in front of the yurt, there should be a pullout in front of the cabins, or if you want to drop off your items and park at the beginning of the driveway, there is a little spot in front of the post that says the address right at the cul-de-sac entrance.

We are surrounded by wildlife!

Our property is adjacent to State Wilderness Area. The red gate at the bottom of the driveway leads into trails at the far side of Mueller State Park (main entrance of CO67 outside Divide).

  • Please be mindful with your animals. No dogs allowed in State Wilderness Area.

  • Keep all food inside yurt. Not in cars or tents.

  • You may see wild turkeys, deer, elk, moose, bear, mountain lion, fox, skunk, rabbits, or wild kittens.

  • Bear spray is in the hanging pouch by the back door of the yurt in the rare case of unwanted visitors. You may want to familiarize yourself with how to deal with different wild animals, as bears and mountain lions, for example, need to be dealt with very differently.

The Yurt

Parking: drive all the way up the driveway to the yurt. Two cars fit easily in front of the yurt.

There is a front and back entrance to the yurt. You will see on the keychain a lock for each door labeled Yurt Front and Yurt Back.

There are two full size futons. There is bedding for the futons (sheets, blankets and pillows) in the wicker chest. The queen bed is memory foam, so if it is cold, it takes some body heat to soften up.

If it is warm enough, you can open the windows and the dome. You will see the zipper covers on the windows which get rolled up and snapped in, then take off the plastic velcro covers and place them either over the deck or somewhere secure so they won’t blow away or get dirty and scratched. If it rains please be sure to cover the windows! You can either velcro the transparent covers on or zip the solid covers down, just please be sure there is no rain getting into the yurt, especially near anything electrical. It is not necessary to close the dome during light rain showers, only for severe showers and wind but it will help keep the heat in towards the end of the day.

The kitchen is fully stocked with dishes, pots, pans, utensils and many other amenities. There is a hot water pot, toaster, and a small refrigerator/freezer, as well as a propane stove and grill setup on the deck just outside the back door.

Preferably, please keep all appliances unplugged when not using.

Headlamps by the front door.

Heating the yurt:
It does get chilly at night so you may want to start thinking about retaining heat early on in the day by putting plastic covers over windows or closing the dome. There is a propane heater, Mr. Heater, that is simple and safe to use. On cooler days, it can take 2 to 3 hours to heat the yurt with the Mr Heater (make sure to put the blower on). Although the yurt has more air flow and ventilation than a normal house, we still want to be extra cautious using propane inside. There is a carbon monoxide and smoke detector in the kitchen area, however PLEASE DO NOT LEAVE THE YURT UNOCCUPIED WITH HEATERS ON or SLEEP WITH HEATERS ON.
If you use the electric heaters, best to use a plug on a GFI switch (the little reset button) and place larger electric heater on provided stone or garden pavers.

The Cabins

Keys to each cabin are hanging in the yurt by the front door.
Each cabin is currently stocked with battery-operated lights, a heating unit, electrical access (extension cords), and extra blankets.

Gas firepit

ABSOLUTELY NO OPEN FIRES. The ONLY fire you can have outside is with the propane fireplace behind the yurt! Colorado suffers too many wildfires every year.

The gas firepit is very easy to use. Make sure the propane tank is open (righty tighty -close, lefty loosey - open) and just push in and turn the knob until the flames ignite. You can turn counter clockwise to turn up the flames.

*** If there is ANY evidence that you were having an open fire of any kind you will be FINED A MINIMUM OF $200****
